Everything You Need To Know About The BC39

One of the most anticipated Midget races of the year will take place this week at The Dirt Track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The fourth running of the BC39 for USAC Midgets will be held Wednesday, August 3 and Thursday, August 4.

The Race

This will be the fourth edition of the BC39, a race honoring the legacy of the late USAC champion Bryan Clauson. In Clauson's honor, the race helps bring awareness to Driven2SaveLives, an Indiana Donor Network program.

The race will be 39 laps and pay $15,000 to the winner -- the largest payout in Midget racing.

Brady Bacon won the inaugural race in 2018 and Zeb Wise scored the win in 2019. The race was not held in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kyle Larson won last year's version in thrilling fashion after a spirited battle with Thomas Meseruall and Justin Grant.

The Track

The Dirt Track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a quarter-mile oval that was built in 2018 prior to the inaugural BC39. The track is located inside turn three of the historical oval that hosts the annual Indianapolis 500.

The Format

A "Draft Party" will be held on Main St. in Speedway, Indianapolis on Tuesday night. At the Draft Party, drivers and teams will select their starting positions for Wednesday's heat races.

The on-track action will get underway Wednesday night with 12 heat races, each of which will be 10 laps. Drivers will gain points in heat races based on passing points, which takes into consideration finishing position and the number of positions gained/lost. Passing points will determine starting position in the qualifying races on Thursday night.

Thursday's qualifying races will be 10 laps each with top-six starting positions inverted and the top point earner from Wednesday's heat races starting sixth.

Total points from the heat races and qualifying races will be added to set the feature starting lineup, along with transfers from the B-Main, C-Main and front of the D-Main races. The top 16 in points will make up the first eight rows of the main event.

The next six positions will be filled by the top six finishers in the B-Main. There will then be an option for provisionals for USAC and IMS.

What Is The Stoops Pursuit?

The Stoops Pursuit, held on Wednesday night, provided one of the most wild finishes we've ever seen back in 2019.

The Stoops Pursuit is a 25-lap race split into five-lap segments. The field will include 24 starters – heat race winners plus the highest point earner in each heat are eligible, along with promoter’s options. The starting lineup is inverted by fastest heat race time, with promoter’s options starting at the rear. Every five laps, USAC will throw a competition flag, and cars with a net loss in position will be called to exit the track along with the last place car.

The last car standing when the final checkered flag waves will be named the winner.

Storylines

NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson enters this year's race as the defending winner of the BC39. Inaugural BC39 winner Brady Bacon is also entered for this week's event.

- Larson isn't the only driver with NASCAR ties planning to compete in the BC39. NASCAR Cup Series drivers Chase Briscoe and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. will both be competing, as will NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Sheldon Creed.

- 10-time World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz will make his USAC Midget debut during the BC39.

- Fresh off his Indiana Sprint Week championship, Justin Grant enters the event as a favorite after coming up just short of victory one year ago. Grant's RMS teammate Thomas Meseruall is also expected to be a contender for the win.

- In his first year away from the NASCAR Cup Series, Ryan Newman picked up an SRX victory earlier this year at Stafford Motor Speedway. He'll make his way to the BC39 for the second year in a row to drive for Clauson-Marshall Racing.

- A strong group of female drivers will be in competition this week at the BC39. Kaylee Bryson, Taylor Reimer, Maria Cofer, Mariah Ede and Jade Avedesian are among the females who are entered for the race.
