PCC Motorsports will return to competition for the June 9-12 double Dreams at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, with Spencer Hughes of Meridian, Miss., behind the wheel, team owner Craig Sims revealed to DirtonDirt.com.

Absent from action since Sims split with Kyle Strickler of Mooresville, N.C., earlier this month, Hope, Ind.-based PCC Motorsports will field a Longhorn Chassis for Hughes, 20, the 2020 Comp Cams Super Dirt Series Rookie of the Year who made his Eldora debut at last September’s spectator-free Intercontinental Classic after winning an invitational berth via fan voting. Sims met Hughes while at Eldora racing with Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., and was impressed by the budding young racer.

"We parked right next to them, and I watched that kid work his tail off all weekend and he made the show all three nights (finishing ninth, 19th and 20th)," Sims told DirtonDirt.com. "He is very humble and a respectful young man that works hard, but he has never been in a Longhorn so we will see what happens.”

Hughes first turned heads in the Super Late Models in 2017 when, at 16, he became the youngest driver to win a Southern All Star Racing Series event. He spent 2018 running for Henderson Motorsports before focusing on Crate Late Model and open-wheel modified action in ’19. Last year he returned to regular Super Late Model racing with Louisiana car owner Bill Langston and won two Comp Cams features en route to a third-place finish in the points standings and top-rookie status.

“I couldn’t be more thankful for Craig and his family for allowing me to have this big of an opportunity in top-notch equipment,” said Hughes, who on May 14-15 won Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series events at Hattiesburg (Miss.) Speedway and Jackson Motor Speedway in Byram, Miss. “I went from not having plans to go (to Eldora) to now knowing I will have the chance to go compete against the best in the business in the best equipment out there.

“These type of opportunities are very few and far between and I just can’t thank them enough for believing in me. And also a huge thank you to everyone who has been behind me and allowed me to be able to be in a position where I feel like I can take full advantage of this opportunity.”

Sims said the collaboration is “just a one-race deal for now,” but he plans a limited schedule of major events the rest of 2021 with plans on finding a driver for a full-time program in 2022.
