What Is The Snowball Derby?
The Snowball Derby is the biggest pavement short track racing event in North America. The race itself is a 300-lap Super Late Model race that takes place the first Sunday of December at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida.
The race itself is the culmination of four nights of racing action at Five Flags Speedway that includes local division racing and the biggest Pro Late Model race in North America, the annual Snowflake 100.

Where Does The Snowball Derby Take Place?
The Snowball Derby is held every year at Five Flags Speedway. Five Flags Speedway, which opened in 1953, is a fast, but extremely abrasive half-mile oval in Pensacola, Florida.
Five Flags Speedway has 15 degrees of banking in its long, sweeping corners, and nine degrees of banking on the straightaways.
What Cars Are Used In The Snowball Derby?
The Snowball Derby is contested with Super Late Models. Super Late Models are a straight-rail chassis race car with engines capable of producing more than 600 horsepower.
The Snowflake 100 is a Pro Late Model event. Pro Late Models are identical to Super Late Models in every visible way, but they are different under the hood. Pro Late Models use a crate engine that outputs approximately 425 horsepower.
How Much Does The Snowball Derby Pay to Win?
The 2024 Snowball Derby will pay $50,000 to the race winner, which is the largest winners’ share in the 57-year history of the Snowball Derby. For reference, the 2023 Snowball Derby paid $35,000 to Ty Majeski.
For many years, the Snowball Derby paid less than $25,000 to the winner. The event broke into the $30,000 threshold in 2022 before rising to $35,000 in 2023. Now the winners’ purse will increase once again to a whopping $50,000, a year-over-year increase of $15,000.
