American Flat Track, the premier flat track motorcycle racing series in the nation, has made its way to FloRacing for the 2024 season. And while FloRacing has not been a stranger to two-wheeled racing on dirt in the past, we know that there are many FloRacing subscribers who are unfamiliar to this type of racing. With that in mind, we wanted to take you all to school and offer up an “American Flat Track 101” class per se. So, let’s get started here with Everything You Need To Know about American Flat Track.

What Is American Flat Track?

American Flat Track, sometimes referred to as “AFT Racing,” is “America’s Original Extreme Sport” according to AFT itself. Established in 1954, AFT is a dirt motorcycle racing series that races on the same type of dirt tracks that are commonly used for other forms of dirt racing like Sprint Car, Midgets, and Late Models.

The riders use custom-built and production-based motorcycles that can reach speeds of 140 mph on the straightaways and as fast as 90 mph in the turns.

Are There Different Divisions Within AFT Racing?

American Flat Track has two divisions. The premier division is the “Mission SuperTwins” class. The second division is the Parts Unlimited AFT Singles class.

The SuperTwins class uses twin-cylinder motorcycles (649-900cc), while the Singles class uses production-based 450cc single cylinder engines.

American Flat Track Race Day Format

Much like your standard dirt race, AFT has practice, qualifying, heat races, and their feature event. Qualifying and heat racing will determine the starting field for the feature race for most events on the calendar.

American Flat Track 2024 Schedule

There are 16 events on the 2024 American Flat Track schedule. The season kicks off with a “Daytona Bike Week” doubleheader on Thursday, March 7 and Friday, March 8 at the DAYTONA Flat Track, which sits just outside of turns one and two at Daytona International Speedway.

From there the series heads a few hours north to Senoia, Georgia to take on the Senoia Raceway on March 23.

After about a month off AFT heads to the half-mile dirt oval at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas on April 27.

AFT then heads west for a two-event California swing at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California on May 4 and then a few days later in Southern California at Ventura Raceway on May 11.

One month later the series heads to the Northeast to take on two half-miles in the Tri-State area at Orange County Speedway in Middletown, New York on June 15, and then at Bridgport Speedway in Swedesboro, New Jersey on June 22.

Just a week later the series is back on another half-mile at the Allen County Fairgrounds in Lima, Ohio on June 29.

The last announced half-mile race of the season will take place at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, South Dakota on August 6.

American Flat Track will celebrate America’s independence on July 6 in DuQuoin, Illinois with its first event on a one-mile track in 2024. AFT will hold two more races on one-mile ovals on August 31 and September 1 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Illinois.

AFT will also run two “TT” events at the historic Peoria TT in Peoria, Illinois on July 28, and on the streets of Sturgis, South Dakota during Sturgis Motorcyle Rally week on August 11.

The season will conclude on September 6 with a still to be announced event.

What Manufacturers Are In AFT Racing?

Chances are the first, second, and third motorcycle brands that you’re thinking of in your head right now are participants in American Flat Track racing.

Harley-Davidson, Indian Motorcycles, KTM, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Royal Enfield, and Honda all field entries in AFT with Honda returning to the SuperTwins class after a few years away from the sport.

Who Are The Star American Flat Track Riders?

The conversation starts and ends with defending champion Jared Mees. The rider from Sebastian, Florida is rewriting the AFT record books every time he hops aboard his Indian motorcycle. Mees is a nine-time Grand National champion, tied for most all-time with Scottie Parker. Mees also has 72 wins, which is third on the all-time list. Mees can move into second on the all-time list with seven victories this season. He currently trailes Chris Carr by six victories for second and trails Scottie Parker by 22 victories for most all-time.

Beyond Mees there is Dallas Daniels, who brought the fight to Mees all of 2023 for the championship. The rising star already has seven victories in his career. Brandon Robinson and Briar Bauman are a couple more names to watch, especially at the season-opening events in Daytona.

In Singles competition, Kody Kopp is a two-time champion is looking to become the first three-time champion of the division, but he’ll have to deal with riders like Trent Lowe, Tom Drane, and Chase Saathoff.
